"Are Dance Competitions Breeding Grounds for Overuse Injuries?"

Winker examines the dance competition culture and the data that supports the arising issues in physical and emotional injuries facing young dancers. The essay dissects the culture of the community, the most common injuries, as well as how sustainability practices can improve these issues.

"Are Dance Competitions Breeding Grounds for Overuse Injuries?" was written as a culminating work for Sustainability in Dance Practices, Independent Project, and completed on March 16th, 2020.

"Not So Stupid!"

Not So Stupid! is a critical analysis of the choreography of Erica Sobol and how the richness of movement quality encourages the audience to feel a sense of nostalgia, and so emotionally that it forces you to connect with the dancer. Using Heinrich Wolffin's art history model, Winker explains how the brain's mirror neuron system uniquely affects the dance audience.

"Not So Stupid!" was written as a final essay for Historical Approaches to Western Concert Dance completed on November 27th, 2019.
